I think and easier way to think of it is to rewrite 9^3 as (3^2)^3
This gives you 3^6 and 1/3 times 3^6 is 3^5 or 243

(1/3)(9)^3 = (1/3)(9*9*9) = 3*9*9 = 3*81
= 243
or
(1/3)(9)^3 = (1/3)(3^2)^3 = (1/3)(3)^6 = 3^(6-1) = 3^5 = 243

(9)^3= 729, because 9*9=81, 81*9=729
729*1/3= 729/3 = 243

Basically, this is saying 9^3 divided by 3. You've got a computer, therefore you've got a calculator, therefore you can find the answer to the simple arithmetic.
