I'm not a fan of hamsters in general, especially the long haired type. (I don't want to be a horrible person, but as they get older, sometimes...gunk...gets stuck to their fur on their bums...)

In my opinion all they do is sleep and eat. Of course that's what most animals do, especially small ones, but the difference is that most other animals will be willing to wake up and see you whereas hamsters are usually just grumpy.

They're easy to keep, there's many starter kits availible. You prettymuch just need a hamster cage, a wheel, a food bowl, a house/nest box, and a water bottle. I would recommend Carefresh (a paper product) or Aspen (a wood product) bedding. They eat a commercially availible Hamster food which is usually a mix of different seeds and corn, however I'd also give them "lab" or "nutri" blocks as hamsters can be picky eaters and not get all of their vitamins. You can also give them a couple pieces of fresh vegetables here and there, like half a baby carrot.

Like I said, I don't really like hamsters, but I wish you luck if you get one. I've had almost every small animal out there, and I also work at a pet store. Out of all of the ones similar to hamsters (hamsters, gerbils, mice, dwarf hamsters, degus, rats, etc.) I prefer and recommend mice and rats. Rats need a much bigger cage though, and more socialization, so I would recommend mice to you.

Mice make great pets for people of all ages. They can become very tame and social with their human caregivers and are a lot of fun to watch. They also come in all sorts of colours, markings, and fur types- there’s different mice for everyone!

You could check out my site: http://mice.wordpress.com if you're interested at all. I have more care info there, and if you live in ON, Canada I'm expecting a couple litters soon.

Either way, have fun! Enjoy your new pet :D

I've had several teddy bear hamsters in my life- I never noticed a shedding problem, although I'm sure they must shed.

I've had them get different sizes- the last one we had was rather big he was probably 6 & 1/2 inches long from nose to tail.

You feed them hamster food that is available at the petstore. They will also eat treats like popcorn, cookies, fruits and veggies (mine liked carrots and apple) but their main diet should be the hamster food you buy sicne it's nutrionally balanced for them.

They are very sweet creatures :)

Most Teddy Bear Hamsters will fit in the palm of your hand their entire life. There is food made for Hamsters. They are omnivorous. Get only one as they fight. They are active at night, so pick out your Hamster in the late afternoon. Get a square cage about 35cm x 50cm with an exercise wheel; the bar spacing should be .5cm MAX. You should get one around 4 weeks old, so you can tame it. Handle your Hamster often so it is sociable. Don't let your friends handle it, Hamsters can catch colds.

Um yeah I had one, and it ALWAYS stepped in it's own crap, and then it would dry to it's feet/legs and no matter how many times I washed him/cleaned the cage... he'd just step in it again. The vet never knew why he did it, and then about two years into his life he was diagnosed as "bored" which didn't even explain the fact he was losing hair at an alarming rate... So my advice is... get a cat or a dog.

i suggest a regular hamster. teddy bears are more aggressive and hostile. i have oen that you can't even touch without getting bit...{she's bit anyone and everyoen that has touched her..me my family,friends,cats..and she killed a rabbit} she is really big and furry. i had a regular hamster also. i never had a problem with her and she got the same amount of attention as the teddy bear..never once bit, was smaller, cuter, and more playful.
