I preferably use pads. I use the Always brand. I read about tampons on the labeling with the instructiona and it talks about Toxic Shock Syndrome. I didn't to try using tampons, so I just use pads.
There are actually two different types of this condition. Toxic shock syndrome, which is caused by Staphylococcus aureus bacteria, has been associated with the use of tampons. (TSS was initially linked to a particular brand of tampons, which have since been taken off the market.) Although the exact connection is still not clear, researchers suspect that certain types of high-absorbency tampons provided a moist, warm home where the bacteria could thrive.
Although TSS usually occurs in menstruating women, it can affect anyone who has any type of staph infection, including pneumonia, abscess, skin or wound infection, a blood infection called septicemia, or a bone infection called osteomyelitis. related infection, streptococcal toxic shock syndrome, or STSS, is caused by streptococcus bacteria. Most often STSS appears after streptococcus bacteria have invaded areas of injured skin, such as cuts and scrapes, surgical wounds, and even chickenpox blisters. It almost never follows a simple streptococcus throat infection (strep throat).
But you can decide which you prefer.

I personally prefer tampons. What I would do before I got pregnant was during the day I would wear tampons and at night, I would wear a pad. I mainly prefer tampons because pads would irritate my skin. You just have to be very careful when using tampons because of the risk of Toxic Shock Syndrome (TSS). It is a very serious thing and it can be fatal. If you are careful and never leave your tampon in for more than 4 hours, you should be fine. I've never known anyone with TSS nor heard any other cases of it. But it does exist so be careful.
If you do decide to use tampons, I recommend Playtex Gentle Glide. The plastic applicator is better than the card board. And make sure you go for the unscented tampons in the blue box. The deodorized tampons, in the pink box, can give you an infection.
Whatever size you choose just depends on how heavy your flow is.
I hope my advice has been helpful to you and good luck with your decision.

Pads. I was raised to just use tampons for swimming. Because of the whole risk of damaging your insides by the toxic shock syndrome that you can get from tampons. I do admit i have used tampons occasionally for dance. I like Tampax Pearl.

use pads at night only. Always driweave with wings. Pearl Tampax during the day. I always make sure I have the right absorbancy with the tampon and change it every 5-6 hours.

I like to use pads because I hear about all the health issues with using tampons and I don't like the feeling.

tampons are the overall best choice. they are comfortable, discreet, and allow you to continue doing your regular daily activities. there is a rare risk of getting TSS (1 in every 100,000 girls and women get it) but as long as you change your tampons every 4-8 hours you should be fine.
as far as the best tampon that really comes after experimenting with a few brands. i have tried playtex gentle glide and don't like them because the string is weak and when trying to remove the tampon, you have to pull it hard which leads to stress on the tampon resulting in a little pain. also any tampon with a cardboard applicator is not a good choice because they are painful going in, exspecially for beginners.
my personal favorite tampon is tampax pearl. they are farely slim, plastic so that they go in well, and have a sturdy string so removal is painless.

Pads are better, cause at least you can't get TSS (Toxic Shock Syndrome) and the best pad brand is Always. It depends on how heavy your flow is. I don't like tampons... =)

I tried tampons several different times over the years and never did like them, yucky feeling, but everyone is different. I always used the pads. Try both tho, because what is best for you may be different for someone else, do whatever makes you comfy!
