It is not that there are both bitter and sweet memories, but that the same memory is bitter and sweet at the same time.
for example: As a senior in college I had a very special 'friend', and, to celebrate our graduations, we went to our favorite restaurant. We ordered our very favorite dishes, and heard our favorite song. We danced for the last time, knowing that we would never see each other again. The dance was beautiful, but bittersweet.
another example, according to some, is woody allen, and some of his quotes, which are at the same time, funny and sad: "And my parents finally realize that I'm kidnapped and snap into action immediately. they rent out my room." "In my house I'm the boss, my wife is just the decision maker." "I'm thankful for laughter, except when milk comes out of my nose."
example: my relationship with chocolate is bittersweet, as is the chocolate itself. I like it very much, but I know, even as I am enjoying the wonderful flavor, that I'm gaining 3 pounds, and am going to get a zit.

A memory filled with mixed emotions. As in I have fond memories of playing with my dog and sad memories of his death. The sum of the memories of my dog is bittersweet. Part bitter, part sweet.

It means something that you look forward to complete, yet you feel like you will miss it. It's hard to put into words. Take high school, it is a bittersweet experience to graduate because you are looking forward to college yet you feel sad about missing your friends.
