Do you mean a real first edition -- first printing, w/ dust jacket, in very good condition? If you have that, you may want put it in your bank vault immediately and begin checking its value.

Check w/ rare booksellers; for example,

www.abebooks.com

One first edition of the Tale of Mr. Tod is currently listed by one bookseller for over $10,000. Here's the description given for it:

"F. Warne & Co, 1912. First edition. 12mo. Grey paper covered boards, lettered in green and with pictorial onlay on the upper cover. Pictorial endpapers, 14 colour illustrations and many small line drawings. A fine copy in its printed glassine dustwrapper. The wrapper is in very good condition with a couple of minor chips to edges. On sending the manuscript for Tod to her publisher’s Potter wrote of it 'I think this story is amusing.' It differs from her other stories in that the principal characters are villains. The opening section of the original manuscript read 'I am quite tired of making goody goody books' whilst the book on publication read, 'have made many books about well behaved people.' It differs also in that it has fewer colour illustrations, introduces the use of line drawings and moves away from the style of short paragraphs used in the early tales."

Most genuine "first editions" are in the $150+ range. The price, of course, will depend on the condition of the book. If is not very good, does not have a dust jacket, is an American first edition rather than a true British one, is a "first edition" but not a first printing, etc., etc. the value will be less.

Scan the abebooks listing first; then check with multiple knowledgeable booksellers in your area -- or by email.
