I have a 2001 ford mustang gt My car turned off yesterday and when I turned it back on it said check engine. AutoZone told mt it was the crankshaft positioning sensor and I changed it but after a while the light came back on and the sensor got messed up again. What could the problem be?

Autozone clerks are wanna be mechanics in the first place! You need to have someone read the codes. Unless they read codes they are simply guessing! Pay the pro a few bucks or purchase a code reader for your car. It is possible that the crankshaft or camshaft sensor may be at fault but my money is more on the connector! They get moisture in them and corrode. It can also be a plethora of other items such as an ignition module or coil overheating.

On most Fords a check engine light indicates a problem with the O2 sensor you can change this.
The crank position sensor is a Halleffect switch that generates an electrical pulse when a magnet passes the sensor. Sometimes a voltage is applied to the sensor and when the magnet passes the sensor it generates a flucuation in that static voltage which is then measured by the ECM.
Its the same concept with the O2 sensor, I would look into changing the O2 sensor next given the cars age.
You can also go to a shop, if the light has come on a trouble code has been set in the computer, once the problem is resolved the code must be removed. If you live in a tail pipe testing state the vehicle will fail the test if the code is not cleared after the problem is corrected.

What do you mean by the sensor got messed up again. Does the ckp code keep reseting? You should perform a wire wiggle test and check the connector terminals for spreading, may be causing intermittent loss of ckp signal.

It could be the connector, the wires, the computer, or the magnet could be damaged, (for example the magnet could be cracked). Any of those problems would cause the same code to come on.
