Usually that is smells coming from the padding and the carpet backing. That is really where the liquid stains go. Now and again sprinkle baking soda or borax on the carpet before you go to bed and then vacuum up in the morning. This will absorb the odors left by stains so that when you wet the carpet you do not bring smells to the surface.

Do you know how old the carpet is?
Are there pets in the household?
Have you had any leaks in the ceiling, walls or windows or doors in the past that would be a source of prior mold problems?
If you have any doubt tear up a portion of the carpet and examine the pad, floor below and underneath the carpeting. It may be time to see if there's hardwood floor beneath. If so get them filled with wood putty, sanded and finished with a sealant then throw area rugs around. Carpets are like a sponge in the kitchen, germ and dirt sucking hazards.

It could be, that the padding underneath is rotting, or, its moldy, and when you add the water vapors, it starts the "process" all over again...
So, I would get some one to look at the carpet underneath...(It maybe the carpet itself, that has mold underneath the thing)...
I wish you well..

if its your own steam cleaner, do it again & put a couple of drops of ammonia in your water solution & no cleaner...ammonia kills mold
after you are finished, open your windows and turn on your fans and off your AC & let it dry in the heat instead of in the cool

You may have gotten it too wet. You need to check to make sure that you do not have mold growing under it.
