i am so excited. my hubby is on his way to go pick up a fetal baby heart monitor. Does anyone have any experiences with these devices? do you end up listening to the baby all day? is one brand better than the other? any recommendations?

I had one for my second pregnancy. I bought the most expensive one I could find and I only used it once. The room has to be super quiet cuz the monitor will pick up everything and when the baby moves the sound is distorted, you can also hear the sounds your stomach makes but its super hard to hear the baby's heartbeat. I hope it works better for you.

Unless you buy one that costs a lot, like $450, they don't work very well. I had one that I bought from Target that was about $30 and it didn't work for beans. I ended-up renting one and it worked great. It was just like the one that my doctor used. It was really fun at first, but I noticed that the baby didn't like it. Everytime I did it, he would start moving around like he was uncomfortable. I have no real explanation for this, but I believe the doppler waves really bugged him. Once I recognized this, I only used it when I hadn't felt him move in a while, just so I'd know he was OK. I recommend that you rent one and use it sparingly. It all sounds the same anyway :)

Congratulatioins!! How exciting.

I remember when I was pregnant with my son. We listened the old fashioned way, with a stethiscope (My husband and I had one since we were both in the medical profession) This was before they had fetal hearth monitors available for public purchase.

I remember it well because while my husband was listening to the heartbeat, our son kicked right where the listening piece was at. It hurt his ear. LOL. My son had quite a kick.

Enjoy it.

If he is buying it from the store.... you might as well tell him to turn right back around and return it. They do NOT work worth a flying monkey poo. If its a doppler, then yes, its a great thing to have, but they are costly and you can only get them offline or from your doctor.

I am sorry to tell you that those things do not work well at all. I was prob. just as excited as you are to get one and I was completely disappointed when it NEVER worked, even late into my pregnancy :o(.
Dont open it or call him and tell him not to buy it :o( Sorry to be the bearer of bad news

They do not work until the last part of your pregnancy...do not even bother wasting your money...we bought one.
