Why do the SF Giants always trade for offensive hitters every year?

I am a big Giants fan, but I am sick & tired of the stupid GM idiot we have Brian Sabean. He always trades for hitters and he should be thinking about defense, especially our pitching. The bottom line is our pitching sucks, we got no relievers & no closer. Benitez? He freaking weak, that guy can't save nothing.

I think Sabean has been coasting on his rep for a while. He made some adept trades back in the day (Jason Schmidt was a steal), and I think the trades for Randy Winn and Steve Finley were both smart deals. However, I think his most memorable trade is unfortunately one that backfired, where they gave up Nathan, Bonser and Liriano for Pierzynski.

Sabean likes to deal (26 trades with 18 different GMs in the past five years), but I'm not sure that he always makes wise choices. Still, it's tough to say much against the guy, given the Giants' run up through 2004. If he can do it without Bonds, then I'll really be impressed.

The bottom line is that you need someone to protect Barry Bonds. Maybe not in this day and age, but over the past few years the Giants could have won atleast 1 world series had they acquired an allstar batter to put behind bonds. Just imagine Vladimir Guerrero following Bonds and his 200 walks. I mean Bonds would see more pitches, Guerrero would see more pitches and the number 2 hitter ahead of Bonds would see more pitches. I guess as long as Bonds is in your lineup, the GM will be forced to pick up someone who can back him up. Pedro Feliz, is not exactly the answer, neither is Moises Alou.

Defense is way over-rated in baseball. The difference between a great defensive player and an average one is a few runs a season. Offense is much more valuable, especially if you can get it from catcher, 2b, or SS.
