Ethanol is a type of alcohol. It is the kind that you find in alcoholic beverages, and it is often used in science. For example, I would use a diluted form of ethanol (not pure) to decontaminate my workbench and hands/gloves before doing cell culture. It can be used in many things. Any alcohol can be denatured, this is done by adding a chemical that prevents people from drinking it. The government strictly monitors alcohol that is used for drinking, and when it is to be used for science, it must usually be denatured.

Denatured alcohol usually has a chemical added that will make a person who drinks it extremely ill. Aside from the government regulations, pure alcohol is also very toxic (remember that most beer is only about 5-7% alcohol). Denaturation aslo prevents people from trying to dilute it to make a drink, and thus prevents people from dying due to math errors.

If you are wanting to make a product for use with people - like perfume, you must make sure that the alcohol that you use has been denatured with a chemical that will not interfere with the chemicals in the purfume, and that it will not interact to form something that would be toxic via skin contact.

Hope that helps.

Ethanol is a type of alcohol period (CH3CH2OH). Ethanol can either be pure or denatured. They usually add a little methanol or isopropanol to make "denatured" ethanol. This makes it poisonous so people won't drink it. You also don't have to pay the sin tax on denatured alcohol. It should be ok to use it for perfumes. I would prefer it be denatured with isopropanol since that is used in rubbing alcohol (70% iPrOH, 30% water), and therefore isn't toxic to the skin. Methanol is more toxic to the skin.

Ethanol is not a denatured alcohol. It is a pure alcohol, they type you drink when you drink an alcoholic drink. Methanol CH3OH is the pure alcohol that they put in stuff like another alcohol to make it undrinkable. U can drink ethanol, no problem, but if u drink methanol, you will go blind because it attacks the optic nerve along with all of the other nerves in the CNS. The alcohol used in aftershaves, perfumes, colognes and such is methanol, so do not drink it.

Denatured alcohol is ethanol with added methanol. It is added to make the ethanol undrinkable. Perfumes are generally made from methanol because it is poisonous.

ethanol is available pure ethanol in drinks. Menthylated Ethanol is ethanol with methanol making ethanol not suitable for internal use.
Denaturated ethanol is very flamable. It cause skin dryness and staining.

Though, ethanol is used as extracting solvent for many plant extract as in tincture and carrier of some fragrance as in perfumes, eau de toilet etc.
