1) two answers to this. There is Sims Online - info here

The second answer is that you can get a free download of ONE Part of the the regular PC game. It can be downloaded at the Teen People site (I'm not a teen and don't get the magazine, but apparently EA/Maxis are doing a promotion with a free disk in the magazine right now).

I tested it since I love the game and wanted to see what the download was about. The program takes 10-15 minutes to download if you have broadband. It is NOT the full game, not even close! But it is little custom version of the Sim builder called "Body Shop", the full version of which comes with the game (full has more clothes to try on and ability to customize clothes and other features). The ad however calls it Create-A-Sim, which makes it a little odd because in the REAL CAS, you can breed the sims you build to see what their baby, or multiple babies could look like. It uses diploid genetics btw, so blue and green eyes are recessive, blonde hair is recessive to brown or black, etc.

Anyway, the program allows you to make a sim that is an age you choose, like a baby, toddler, teen, adult, or elder. You can make them look like yourself (self-sim) or do one after a celebrity or any person (real or imaginary) that you want. You can make as many sims as you would like to make and then save them.

The idea with this trial download is that if you'll like to see what you can do with sims that you have built, you can import them into the REAL game when you buy it.

Not everyone's computers are up to spec. You can read the specifications needed (above link) but a method that is more specific is to actually test your computer with a game tester. My laptop fails this test cos it only has minimum for RAM, a slower CPU and barely adequate graphics card. Ran the free download on my laptop and it ran very very slowly but the poor machine was running pretty hot.
To test your computer (in the black box, pick The Sims 2)

The higher your machine ranks, the better the game will run. My laptop goes at a crawl and has trouble loading some of the scenes! :( My main machine is juiced up a lot more, although it still scores medium to great -- so the game goes relatively fast on my main machine.

Console games will not compare to the PC game. On the main fansite, you'll find very few people discussing anything but the PC/Mac versions.

Console type games seem to be more of a niche and seems to be an okay experience for Simmers who can't otherwise own the computer versions.

Ron Hubbard, the executive producer of the game said this in a recent interview: "Well, we went nuts again. As you know, we don't like to make life easy for ourselves--so we made different designs on several different platforms. So the Game Boy Advance and the DS versions, although they have a pets theme and they have the core gameplay, they're very different from the rest of the lineup.
"On the DS you're running a Sim as a veterinarian, and you run a little pet hospital, which is kind of cool because you get some structure to the gameplay, which was missing before. And the Game Boy Advance version is actually a fairly deep role-playing game. The PS2 edition is the more advanced version of what we did last year. It's got a bunch of extra features--they're in the build mode, which is looking really cool. And the PSP is similar to the PS2 version, as is the GameCube. "

So if you do not have a computer that can handle the specs, you may consider the console games as a way to get started.
