I've been recording with this crappy microphone and I have a feeling that it's making my vocals sound worse than they really are. I'm not a terrible singer. I can sing in key. So, why is it not sounding right in my recordings?

Do not play the bad microphone card? Who the hell do you think you are? I'm not playing cards.
The microphone I'm using is a microphone that you use for voice chat. It doesn't really capture my voice at all. It barely sounds better than a telephone.

Sure! you can have a crappy recording from a mic.
However, we ALL think we sound better than we really do! When you start really recording yourself, even with good equipment, you'll see that it's not as easy as it looks to sing a song perfect. That's why the music biz records parts over and over and over, even with singers who are probably better than you and I can't sing songs perfect in 1 take everytime.
It sounds like you are using like a $5 mic though, if it's that cheap, don't disrespect your voice by singing in it. Get a better one, or see if you can use somebody elses to record from if you just want to record a couple things. I have a shure57 and it's a pretty good all purpose mic. Check out guitar center website. Good luck!

Yes. Make sure you get a good quality microphone from a music store with a good impedence level (such as Shure, Audiovox, etc.) that's made for stage or with a high-quality mixer.
If you insist that the mic is bad and don't have the money to upgrade, try adjusting the equalizer settings to fit the recording.
It's also worth the $50-something dollars to invest in a good-to-high quality microphone for your recordings.
Good luck.

To be honest it doesn't make a LOT of difference. My band recorded an album with two microphones which together cost £20 - it wasn't brilliant, but it wasn't that bad. What is more likely is that you need to EQ your recording better. Try adding a little reverb, and possibly a touch of chorus as well.

A crappy microphone can definitely distort your voice. Get a good one and then see if you still sound bad.

I'm a singer and I've had plenty of experiences with bad microphones. Depending on the quality of the sound system you're using, it certainly could be skewing your sound.
My advice: practice a lot. sing for people. if they all say you sound fine, chances are it's the sound system.

no a voice digitizer does that
besides a mic is only an amplifier of your voice,
if your voice is coming out crappy either back up or stop singing

yes, because it distorts the sound, and if you have bad cabled aswell, that can contribute towards it, but generally you should be able to tell if you have a bad or good voice.

No. Do not play the "bad microphone" card. It is a copout. Get a vocal coach.
