The leaves are turning purple and they're wilting. We've tried fungicides and pesticides, but it doesn't seem to work. It's not every plant, either---kind of scattered. Any ideas?

No dog. But I have three or four plants in a row and only one or two of them look bad.

Did you forget them?

Just kidding. By all reports their awfully hardy plants. If insecticides and fungicides haven't made any improvement, you should probably discontinue their use. They are shade loving plants, so it may simply be that their getting too much sun. Or has it been unseasonable hot for you this year? Much of the country was pelted by a heat wave this summer, it could just be the after effects of that. I'd say keep them watered, and prune dead leaves and stems to keep rot from taking over the whole plant. By next spring, they'll be good as new.

Is it getting enough water? Keep in mind some pesticides can kill your plants, especially something as small and fragile as a forget-me-not. I would recommend not using any chemicals on it. Just keep giving it water and leave it in partial sun/shade areas. The reason some of the plants may be dead and others aren't is the water may have washed off the pesticides on the plants.

We've had a rough time with them in the greenhouse this year...well, in the perennial yard. They do not like the intense heat we've gotten this summer. They are also big time shade lovers in our part of the country (growing zone 5B). Could be some of the plants get the lions' share of whatever food and water there is and are starving the others, or that part of the row has a sun exposure they don't much like. Or, could be you had a weak individual or two. Just like with people, it can happen with plants.

The perennial variety usually dies back in the summer. The Chinese variety are hardier in the heat.
