It depends. During normal maintenance, you may have to add some fluid to the reservoir tank - but you shouldn't have to add too much unless there's a problem or leak. If the reservoir is empty, you may have to add fluid to the radiator directly.

When you add coolant, be sure to use an approximately 50/50 mix of antifreeze & water. Use the proper type of anti freeze for your application. Not sure? Check your owners manual!

Water freezes and it rusts metal. How long do you intend to keep this car?

If you intend to keep the car as long as possible, use Mercedes Benz antifreeze. I'll tell you why:

Most antifreezes uses silicon as the lubricant (for the water pump bushing). Unfortunately, silicon is a solid, and it is suspended in solution as a very fine particulate. Over time it precipitates out of solution and gathers as a gummy yuk predominantly in the radiator and clogs it.

If you're a good little boy and change the antifreeze once a year like they tell you to do, you're putting more and more gummy yuk into your cooling system.

The Mercedes Benz antifreeze uses a liquid lubricant that stays in solution. It's got an anti-corrosive agent in it, so an aluminum engine won't go south. It costs more than twice as much, but I use it anyway.

I got 113K on a water pump using Prestone and changing it every year, then I got 119K on my next water pump using Mercedes Benz AF without changing it until I sold the car.

I won't buy a Mercedes because I don't like the car or the image it projects, but those German dudes sure know how to make high quality stuff.

wise guy is telling you to spend money you dont need to be spending the mixture should be 50/50 but if it is just low adding a little antifreeze will be better than adding water add it into the jug that says coolant if it ran hot and boiled over you may need to add some to the radiator you do not need to buy that expensive antifreeze it is not going to make your water pump last any longer you can buy the pre mixed it is not that expensive either any name brand antifreeze will do the job just as well as the expensive brand

it makes a big difference on what part of the country u are in but the general rule is antifreeze. U should put it in the radiator only if it is cold(the engine) other wise u can get burned if it is hot put it in the tank on the side

As a general rule, its half anti-freeze, half water. Anti-freeze does not act as a coolant, but an agent to keep the real coolant, water, from freezing in cold water. Some times you can find premixed anti-freeze in the stores, but it is really expensive.
