I would be extremely disappointed. The rule of thumb is buy a ring that is a months worth of your salary. I know in some cases the guy would say "what the F" but, I would be happy with going to the jewelry mart in downtown and finding a nice ring that we both agree on. The thought here is if you are not willing to spend a little money on a symbol of your love for her that you are showing the world...then you need to think about it.

No, maybe it's all he could afford at the time. It's about the committment you are making, not about the cost of the ring. I hope things work out for you but if she doesn't like the ring (assuming you're proposing) then she isn't right for you anyways. Find someone who isn't all about material things. GOOD LUCK!!

it is the thought the counts, i totally agree. so jsut as a proposal a fake one would be fine, just as long as youre working on getting the real thing! come on, this is the love of your life!!!!! a fake ring would last for a while. a diamond is forever LOVE is forever!!

well it isn't polite but you could and when your cashed up later get her a real diamond for that ring...Just tell her the truth don't let her think it's real when it isn't. What some of these rings cost is ridiculous...but second hand shops and some r near new or eBay has some bargains also to look at....

Well, considering when my husband proposed, there was NO ring involved and I was thrilled...I have to say no, I wouldn't give a damn. I think it only matters if it's obvious he's just being a cheap ***, you know? It's completely different if he offers it to you in the traditional sense ("I love you, I want to live forever with you, but I'm afraid this is all I have").

This is the way I see it. Who cares if it's real or not. If no one can tell, no big deal. This is what I do. I like to change my wedding set all the time. I shop on HSN, buy whatever rings I want, then wear whatever I want. If it gets lost or stolen, who cares, it's not like your out a lot of money.
So no, I don't mind, my way is more fun anyway.

if the diamond is cubic zirconia or something just make sure the gold is real. don't give her a bubble gum maching ring. but fake diamonds are fine. as long as the gold is very real, you don't want her finger to change colors.

I wouldn't be mad if he didn't imply it WAS a diamond ring. If he wasn't lying... of course that would be a terrible start to a marriage.

YES I WOULD BE MAD BECAUSE SHE'S UNDER THE ASSUMPTION THAT THE RING IS REAL AND IT TURNS OUT TO BE FAKE AND HER FINGER TURNS GREEN COME ON YOU CAN UNDERSTAND WHY SHE WILL GET MAD TELL HER THE TRUTH BEFORE ABOUT THE RING FIRST
