and it really does make a lot of sense. http://catbread.wordpress.com/2006/08/08/the-special-olympics-is-like-a-dog-show/

They are using this poor people like dogs to make themselves feel better. It's really sad.

I have often felt sympathy for the people in the Special Olympics, not because the contestants are retarded and crippled but because someone is using them to feel better about themselves. A lot of charity has this purpose. The 'giver' can say to themselves, 'I'm a good person. See what I do for the 'pitiful ones'.

This really came home to me after Hurricane Katrina last summer when I BECAME the 'pitiful one' as did the rest of my community. I got the impression that the 'relief workers' were doing these things MORE for themselves than for us. And they kept telling us we were poor and downtrodden. We never felt that way before the storm. We are not victims, the storm is just something that happened to us and now we are just straightening our lives around.

If you refuse the label of 'victim' you are either an asshole or suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder. (What a crock of crap!)

Well I ranted!

I disagree.

Using this mentality would assume that everyone in the special olympics suffers from severe mental retardation and that they need your pity. Although it is often used as an event where anyone with some kind of special condition can come to have fun, a lot of the people are actually serious about what they do. Some of them actually train for the special olympics, because they want to show that even though they may have some kind of debilitating condition, they can still compete and be athletic.

Have you ever seen the people with prosthetic legs who compete in races? A lot of them are actually great athletes, I know I wouldn't be able to keep up with them!

The Special Olympics is a wonderful event which offers our most special citizens the chance to shine! Anyone who thinks otherwise can go pound salt! They are not treated like dogs. They are treated with great kindness and tenderness. They work very hard. Only someone who is selfish would see it the way you do. Now that's really sad.
