Nuclear Fusion.

Near limitless source of readily available energy, potential for breeding hydrogen bombs rather than boring old plutonium bombs.

It would alter the entire energy infrastructure that's in place now which runs on fossil fuels.

Next summer--2007--the biggest atom smasher ever conceived will be activated in Switzerland. It called the LHC, or Large Hadron Collider and is at CERN. Anyway, some of the experiments are designed to discover the true nature of gravitation and also test for high dimensions of space. Heady stuff.

Depending upon what they discover, we could end up with the governing equations for a working theory of quantum gravity. That would mean we could begin devising gravity-based technology---stellar travel, worm-holes--the whole nine yards! And that's just the tip of the iceberg...

Still, I think just havinig anti-grav cars would be a great start!

Stem cell and genetic medical research leading to the ability to grow replacement organs and perhaps even regrow lost limbs.

Difficult question to answer...few people predicted the internet. It's funny. I just read a sci-fi story about life 300 years in the future, and they never developed e-mail. They still sent physical "snail-mail" letters, only they did it with teleportation devices.

I think the next wave of information revolution has already begun...the combining of television, cell phone, internet, entire libraries of information and every conceivable method of communication all combined into a cell-phone size contraption which teenagers will beg their parents for the newest hippest model.
