Something like this happened when I went to see the movie Keeping Up with the Steins two or three months ago. (A good movie, BTW.) I was alone in the theater, then a man and woman came in and sat maybe two or three rows above me, and two or three chairs to the right of me.
Cameraderie and companionship is a big part of moviegoing, and of theatergoing as well. It's the shared experience. If the few people in the auditorium sit too far apart, the feeling of shared experience is lost.

You must be picking the best place in the theatre to sit :) This or a concept called primacy may be to blame. Many people choose to sit in the same general area in every theatre, and it's likely that it just so happened to be in the same general area you choose.

Maybe you picked a good spot and they wanted to at least sit near the good spot. I like to sit in the middle of the theater myself.

maybe because you're sitting in the center of the movie theatre..?
but i believe ppl are all basically similar in tastes.. so, if that area appealed to you, it's super likely that it's appealed to someone else-- just like the way that same movie appealed to you both...

Did you ever try and park your car away from others, like in a far corner, it turns into a magnet and suddenly everybody parks next to you!

No, they sit right in FRONT of me. Have had it happen a few times. I got up and moved.
