There are a couple types of lift. When wind blows into a mountain ridge the air is forced upwards causing high pressure. This is called ridge lift and can keep a glider in the air for hours. Rising air that lifts off the ground in a bubble is called a thermal. They tend to drift along and circle like slow motion tornados. Many times you can find that rising air under clouds, and we circle in them to gain altitude. The upper surface of a hang glider wing is curved which causes the air moving over the top of the wing to have to go further, which causes low pressure above the wing. The higher the air speed of the wing, the lower the pressure. This low pressure actually sucks the wing upwards. With lift of 200 feet per minuet we can maintain altitude. Anything above 200, and we can gain altitude. I’ve been in thermal lift going up 600 fpm, and I’ve heard about people being in lift that was like 1000 fpm. (A high speed elevator goes around 400 fpm). Hope that helps.

It isn't, but since this is the Homework topic, I'll give you a bogus answer that your teacher will probably accept.

Lift is generated by the action of air moving past a specially shaped "wing" that is held at an optimal angle to the moving air. The air moves faster over the wing than under, making a net upward force. Because a hang glider does not have an engine to give it airspeed to maintain the lift, it glides forward and loses altitude.

Hang gliders can also ride thermals, turning to stay in large columns of heated air that are rising with respect to air around them, and thus, even though gliding forward and "downward" the hang glider can actually increase its altitude.

You have to jump off a cliff... the wind comes towards the cliff and then shoots upwards along side of the cliff and you catch it right when you step off and it shoots you upward.

its updraft from winds.they jump off cliffs because the wind hits the cliff and rise also heat helps for updraft.
