Years ago, before train and Western expansion, each town had it's own town. This became troublesome for the rail companies because there was not way to schedule train departures. So the government devised a plan to put different regions in different time zones.

The time zones are related to the movement of the earth in relation to the sun. Since the sun rises in the east and sets in the west, it will always be earlier the farther west you travel. For example: When it's 4 in the afternoon in New York, it is 1 in the afternoon in Los Angeles.

Since the earth is spherical in shape thus sun rays do not fall on whole of the earth. Which signifies that day (where sun shines) and night (where sun does not shine). Which means even at those places where sun is shining it cound in different stages like morning, afternoon and evening.

This means that each country falls under different time zone so that they could synchronize their time accordingly. Some countries like US, China, Russia are so big that they may have multiple time zones.

Here GMT means Greenwich mean time which is considered as the central time zone and when its noon for GMT then what would be the time in rest of the world is shown by above image.

A time zone is a region of the world that has taken up a certain local time. For example, Indiana is mostly in the Eastern time zone. Chicago is in the Central time zone-1 hour behind the Eastern time zone. They are to adapt to the different times at which each region experiences sunrise and sundown. The lines that designate time zones aren't straight lines: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Timezones_optimized.png

time zones are zones in different states, it just depends on where you live, like right now where I live it is 4:32pm, wherever you live look at what time it is and see the difference. I think they are important because that way not everbody in the world lives in the same time, some live where its dark for 8 hours and some live where it is light for 8 hours at the same time. LIke in Alaska, they live in daylight most of the time. Check it out on the internet and you will find the answers that you are looking for.

if you take the earth and draw lines from the top to the bottom and space the lines apart so there are 24 lines - the lines would form areas which function as time zones.

the main idea is that the sun shines on the earth on one side, and it's dark on the other side of the earth. The earth rotates around completely in 24 hours.

So at 10am on one side, it would be 10pm on the other side of the earth.
