Can a mother's breast provide milk forever after having a child if she continues to pump or breast feeds a child? I've heard of wet nurses, but after time will their milk dry up too?

A mother can nurse forever. There were women who were wet nurses for 20 years straight, taking one client after another. A famous wet nurse, Judith Waterford, in 1831 at the age of 81, was still producing milk (She admitted sadly that from the age of 75, she only had enough milk to nurse one baby.) See sources section below. Since presumably she hadn't had a baby since her 50th birthday (if not earlier), she must have been nursing for 30 years straight.

The same is *not* usually true of pumping; most women will find that their milk supply dries up if they are exclusively pumping. Nobody has ever tried pumping for 20 years straight, so there's no way to know if *every* woman's milk would dry up or not.

As long as you nurse or pump, you will produce milk. The more a child nurses or you pump, the more milk you make. Even after you stop nursing, you can continue to make a little milk for a time.
