I currently have a pentium 4, 1.6ghz (currently all that i know) processor. i am thinking to change into a higher pentium 4 and have these 2 specific details, hyper-threading and at least 3.0ghz.

I am wondering if i need to change my motherboard or memory, and what specifics do i need to know when picking out the right processor.

The motherboard in your computer determines what CPU and speed it can support as well as supporting Hyper threading or not.

Either check your Owner's manual or go to the manufacturer's website and look up the specifications for your particular computer model.

Hello If your computer is old and you got this processor with it than make sure your motherboard supports this kind of speed I remember 2 months Ago I got a new processor 2.8 Ghz wanted to upgrade it from a 1.8Ghz and what happened was the computer would not want to boot up same thing happend with my old 1.6Ghz compaq you have to have a motherboard that supports this speed if your still using pc133 memory your motherboard is very old so here is my advice and have a nice day.

Yeah you need to check out the manual, but I have to tell you I would be willing to bet your motherboard would not accept the knid of processor type you are talking about.
