I want to remove the door, close in the space half way up and put in a window in its place..

Unless you are skilled at this, STOP NOW! Call in a professional. Here is the problem. The chances are your house has settled (everyone's does) since the original door was installed and getting something else in place of the door (or even replacing the door) can really be tricky (expecially of everything is a tad off kilter which happens during the normal settling process). Call in a professional.
