i bought a female rabbit for breeding and when i got her home discovered she had broken her back leg. i took her stright to the vets and after much consideration descided on trying to save her leg by an external fixture. six weeks passed this did not work and so her leg was amputated aftrer much thought on the quality of life she would have. the vets said she would be able to cope raising young but is this fair on her?

What purpose are you breeding her for? For pets? It isn't genetic, so there would be no problem. I just wanted to reply to ask you a favour. I see rabbits all of the time in the local shelters with facilities for them. Advise the people who come to you about the proper care of their new friend. Let them know what's involved, and recommend spaying. Thanks

DON'T BREED FULL STOP!
There are tons of abandoned rabbits in shelters - why not adopt one of those instead of bringing more rabbits into the world that are probably going to end up in shelters anyway somewhere down the line. Besides having a missing leg would make it harder for the rabbit to move around whilst it is pregnant - so no, don't breed from the rabbit.

I would try it once. Obviously it isn't genetic. If she seems to be having trouble maybe you could take the babies out and take care of them yourself for about an hour a day... if that is possible, I don't know much about rabbits. The vet should know what he's talking about.

I would worry about the weight of pregnancy on her one back leg. It could lead to problems with stress injury to the leg.

You've done so much for this wonderful little rabbit. I would just love and cherish her for herself and not risk the damage to her body.

Kudos to you for being so loving to this little creature. She has a wonderful owner!!

well yes it would be fair, it would be granting her the happiness of offspring, and as long as she wasnt born with the problem her offspring wont have the problem....although it would take a little extra work with a breast feeding three legged rabbit, meaning you would have to help her around and also help her wein the babies when the time is right...

It depends if it'll hurt it to mate or not. And will she be able to look after her young. She'll decide whether she mates with the other rabbit, but the other rabbit may try to mate with her anyway.

The real question here is, is it fair to you? why would you lower your standards to breed with a three legged rabbit? ask yourself that.

I think you should not breed her. all the stress of being a mother and the leg amputation could kill her. decide for yourself baby rabbits, or mothers death?

You could....it's her leg that is gone not her reproductive system. If hse acts ok then why not? I know a guy who had a three legged dog named Tripod and she had pups once.

She would probably be better off if you didn't. She's already been through a lot.
