NO...Definitely...beyond a shadow of doubt...NO
This happened when I was working at Lockheed. There was only one restroom for the women...and one for the men.
An OSHA representative spotted a man coming out of the women's rest room and the California law was placed in our manager's hands.
If a restroom is designated for women...then only women can use it and visa versa. Only if the sign says that both men and women can use the restroom is this permitted.
I know that many people do not know this, but I have seen the law in writing.

California uses pictograms to differentiate the gender that is to use a particular restroom.

Quote from From Wikipedia
"Separation by sex is so characteristic of public toilets that pictograms of a man or a woman are used to indicate where the respective toilets are. These pictograms are sometimes (e.g. in California) enclosed within standard geometric forms to reinforce this information, with a circle representing a women's toilet and a triangle representing a men's facility"

also found a law for service stations at http://www.sen.ca.gov/leginfo/BILL-6-DEC-1998/CURRENT/AB/FROM0500/AB0531/T990816.TXT
" The public restroom shall not be temporary or portable
but shall be permanent and shall include separate facilities for
men and women, each with toilets and sinks suitable for use by
disabled persons in accordance with Section 19955.5 of the
Health and Safety Code and Title 24 of the California Code of
Regulations. "

If there's no choice, then use, as long as you have someone at the door (multiple stalls type thing) making the ladies aware that there's a man inside...
Most men (including me), don't use the bathroom for more than two minutes, unlike women in general who can spend hours doing their hair, talking on the phone, having her girlfriend hold her dress while she pees (why do women bring their girlfriends to the bathroom..do they really need help?)...

I don't live there, but even if there is not a law, custom and respect would dictate that that is not usually a proper choice, for the sake of the comfort of those who might also be using the bathroom, and often custom takes a role where laws do not make specifics.

I'm pretty sure that in any state if you are a man and go into the women's restroom that you will get arrested.

If it has one toilet I would say still use it but lock the door, men can use women in this situation and women can use men. I don't see anything wrong with that. If you gotta go, you gotta go.

I don't know but I wouldn't recommend a guy using a woman's bathroom. They have their own bathrooms.
