I guess if you care about baseball you care about the Red Sox/Yankees because they are two of the top teams in the MLB. Same reason you'd care about the White Sox, or any other team. Makes it better when it's a rivalry with history too.

I've never lived in either of those cities, but as a baseball fan I care a lot about both of those teams. Their rivalry is the best in the game, and each franchise has a long, colorful, and important history against the fabric of the game.
I don't necessarily like either team, but I pay plenty of attention to both.

Probably because they have the biggest rivalry in baseball and people DO care. They may not be fans of either team, but it's still interesting to watch us battle it out. The Sox have the most loyal fans in baseball, we waited 86 years for them to bring it all home. Go Sox!!!!!!!
