I think the question here is really why aren't YOU teaching if you think it's the easiest and over-paid job in the world. Wouldn't that be ideal for someone like you? You sound like you would enjoy hardly working...

Oh, wait.... nice sarcasm there... almost had me until you put "simple master's degree..." LMAO!!!!!

As a special education teacher, the description of my responsibilities takes up 5 pages in small print at the Human Resources department of my district. Plus the 3 pages in small print of a regular ed teacher's responsibilities... and I'm Elementary level so I'm a little dense... what's a planning period? lol.

Returning sarcasm... enjoying joining in the rant....

Oh, wait, dear reader, do you have at least a Bachelor's Degree? Oops... If you do and it's not in teaching, well, it's only another year of classes for you then, or why not a Master's Degree? That way, like me, you can be really hot ****. You can afford the tuition and books... after all, you're going to be rich as a teacher and can pay back your student loans so easily!!!

I also bet you can pass those professional competency tests like Praxis with a blindfold on. Those testing fees are nothing for your budget, either! Then there's the practicums, including the "big one" (student teaching).... no sweat!

Is your arrest record clean? Can't have any nastiness in your background....

Oh, once you get the job, IF you get the job, expect to continue to take graduate-level college courses, attend conferences, etc. to stay current and "highly qualified." Did I mention that it is often out of your own pocket? You'll be buying a lot of classroom supplies out of your own pocket, too, so set some aside! Ah, but you've got a teacher's pay so you're rolling in the dough... no sweat affording all this....

Gee... off at three pm? My morning report time is 7:45 am, and my afternoon release time is 4:00 pm. You think we're done at the release time? Hmm.... that explains why I sometimes am up grading papers and working on center activities until late into the night. Poor me.....

Summers? Let's see. How much professional development coursework do I have to do again? And then we changed curriculum so I'm reviewing that and updating my plans, and.... oh wait... describing the work I do for my classroom over the summer might be seen as "whining." Soooo sorry.

Whew. That felt good. Thanks for the catharsis.

Who are you to judge that teachers are the largest group of whiners? In ANY PROFESSION you have people who whine. Maybe those people had a hard day. And some people just don't love their job.

A teacher who truly loves her job should be praised. They have a degree and are obviously capable of working other jobs that require educational background. Most teachers remain teaching for many, many years because they enjoy helping the kids mold into successful people in society.
Their work days DO NOT end at 3 PM. I have known quite a few teachers through my years, and they more than often stay afterschool to prepare for following day's plans. Even on the weekends, they have to prepare new lesson plans.

Good teachers are not lazy. Good teachers teach. Schools were never a daycare for children. So if you think teaching isn't a real profession, then hire a nanny and have the nanny teach your children. Lazy teachers need to be reported.

Real work means productivity is involved. So it doesn't matter if you are doing physical labor or mental labor to get the job done. So how are teachers lazy if they had to go through 4 years of college and 1 year of credential to get there?

At any rate, I am not a teacher. But I think they should be paid more than they earn, which is an average of 35,000 a year. Of that money, teachers spend a great amount on school supplies for activities and what not, because the school budget is low. They do not get paid during the SUMMER.
Firefighters where I live get paid 80,000 a year. Their schedule is pretty much on one week and off the other.

You are MAD. You need to be more open to see the facts

Let's see..... A teacher's workday ends at no specific time. The planning period is the only time you can return calls, prepare for the week. 1 hour is hardly enough time to correct 35 essays, 35 math pages, record grades, do copies, and check e-mail each day. Most teachers work late into the evening and weekends. Teachers must report at a specific time, and can not just run off for a coffee or snack whenever. Teachers can not go to the restroom as they please. Teachers also spend time in a room with 35 or more students. Some have behavior problems that require constant attention. Teachers also do not get paid in the summer, because they do not work. Teachers do not make as much as others with a master's degree. A construction worker or welder may do physical work, however they do not have a college education. Teachers are not respected in the United States. They are blamed for everything. Most just want to make a positive difference in our children.

You must not have finished school or you would be able to calculate that two months off, doesn't equal half a year, as this is a third grade math calculation. You must also be very secluded if you don't realize that most teachers work two jobs and the average teacher gets to work at least forty-five minutes before their students and usually stays after school until the building is locked and/or ends up taking home things to work on as well. Ahhh...you also forget that it was probably your parents that these so called whiner teachers were calling during their planning, in order to figure out what they could do to better assist you with your learning or disruptive behavior. Ahhh but the real question of the day is why do you feel so insecure with yourself that you would attack the one group of people who are trying to help you improve yourself.

If it weren't for some pretty dedicated teachers, you wouldn't have been able to construct this question with the amount of literacy you did display.

While a teacher's day appears to be short, they have planning, phone calls to parents, and papers to grade, every night of the week. While they may send your child home at 3, many are there until 6 or after. They and others take more work home with them.

Most have to work second jobs, either nights and weekends, or in summers, at least during the first half of their careers, because the salaries, especially in suburban communities, don't provide enough to raise a family in the community where they work.

And for that simple masters degree of which you speak, a teacher is among the lowest paid professionals who have to meet a strict certification requirement.

But if you hear whining, it's mostly because of parents like you, who are not supportive of teachers and public education in general, so that when your kid displays the same lousy attitude that you have in class, the teacher has to put up with his or her disruption to the eduction of the other 33 kids in class, because they know that you won't help straighten your kid out (like your father did you) and that administrators don't want to deal with you either, so they won't do a thing get your kid in line either.

Try taking your kid to a private school, where they don't have to put up with you and your kid. You'll find he won't make it through the first semester, unless both you and he change your ways!

I wonder what you do because you seem extremely jealous that I have spent my summer floating in my pool with my children. And that I get to have Jewish Holidays, Federal holidays, Presidents week, Christmas and Easter to relax. You must also be jealous of the countless hours I do work during the summer on my plans for September, and the late nights I grade papers, and the parents who question everything and the students who resist. But, then again, youmust REALLY be jealous because I have chosen a profession for which I truly love and would teach all year if they made me without complaints because that it what a teacher does. You, sir or madam, are the whiner. PS - I teach sewing!!!!Ha on you. Fun Fun Fun all day long. I've never complained a day in my career.

You are a real piece of work. I would gladly trade my summer vacations (which are about 6 weeks) for higher pay or more prep time or smaller class sizes. Also, the cost of living in Southern California is so high that teachers cannot live on their income without assistance. We have one of the most important jobs, have to have years of education (and have to continue going to school if we want to move up on the pay scale), do tons of unpaid over time, and still we have people like you who think that we whine.

Oh, and by the way, not all of us can be construction workers or welders. But had I been given this choice, I think that I would have still chosen to teach.

If you're reading this, you have a teacher to thank.....Now stop asking stupid questions.

Wow! I typically ignore ignorant statements such as yours. But, you don't sound ignorant; just misinformed. What got my attention though is the hate. You're so filled with it.

Perhaps there is some jealousy involved because your own job is unsatisfying? I suspect you had bad experiences in school and so may not have graduated, but there are still many options available to you. Think of what you would like to do to make you feel fulfilled, then go for it. If you change careers and there is some training required, I'm certain there will be teachers to help you. If you need your GED in order to go to college, again the teachers will be there for you.

It's sad that the educational system obviously failed to give you the ability to evaluate information and make an informed opinion, or to teach you how to debate disagreements with logic. Clearly you have no interest in actually learning something, because your tone makes it obvious that you have already made up your mind and have no desire to listen to an opinion contrary to your own.
I'm a teacher, and I'm so sorry that we have to turn ignorant fools like you loose on the world. I'm sorry for you that you are so set in your ways that you will have a very difficult time continuing to develop as a human being. A mind is a terrible thing to waste, as you so clearly demonstrate.

You have got to be kidding! Teachers start out as dedicated people who want to teach someone to read, write and do Arithmetic, and when they find out that nobody has to listen to them, or get any kind of discipline, they lose their vision of why they wanted to be a teacher in the first place. If more students would come to class wanting to learn and keep moving up to higher education, it would make a teacher's day much easier! The stress is what makes them whine. So, get movin! and oh, yeah, GROW UP!
