Hawkeyes, Old Gold Knights, Bugeaters, Mankilling Mastodons were all nicknames that were used for UNL pre-Cornhuskers. Take your pick.

it was the bugeaters until Iowa gave up the nickname cornhuskers back in the 1920s. good luck getting anyone from Lincoln NE to admit that

Well, NOW they are the Cornhuskers...or "Huskers" and they have 2 mascots: Herbie the Husker and Lil Red.
I dont know their original name though.
