I'm an US citized and have a day lay over in Dubai, and I want to visit a friend in Abu Dhabi. Is there any cheap/convenient ground transportation from dubai to my destination?

The cheapest and most convenient method is a shared taxi van. Call Dubai Transport (the municipal taxi company) on arrival to ask about schedules and book a pickup. It's convenient, cheap, and a reasonably comfortable ride. And it's great that you don't have to do any of the driving.

You can take a bus, taxi or rent a Harley Davidson. Why don't you call your friend and give your friend your address in Abu Dhabi. Your friend would know the area better than you and could make the trip over and back. By jeep the trip could be anywhere from 5 to 8 hours going back and forth, depending where the person lives.

there are many rent-a-car kiosks at the Dubai Airport and its fairly cheap . If you don't know yr way its better to hire a taxi .. Its abt a 2 hr drive to abu dhabi from Dubai and the freeways and highways are excellent. Good luck !

u can use bus its emirates express it will charge you 15 dh only from dubai to abu dhabi

taking the bus is cheaper than a taxi however you should be a ware of the BO because many Asian workers take the bus Europeans and locals mostly don't, you better give your Friend a call and ask him to meet you in Dubai.
