I have heard so much about both, and I am pretty much convinced that AMD Athlon is better - but - i've heard that there are a lot of incompatibilites between AMD and windows because of a deal made by Intel with windows. also, which is better in general for a laptop? I am not a hardcore gamer, i just want absolute reliability and longevitiy for a desktop replacement laptop. i want something that will last me AT LEAST 3 years with no hassles.
...also whats your opinion on which is a better bet - xp home or pro or media center?

I have used AMD for years and have never had an issue with incompatibilities with windows, I think AMD bashers are to blame for the rumors.
I believe the Intel centrino is better for a laptop as I hear it has been optimized for long battery life.
If you wanted a home theater; media center might be best, for a laptop I would go with pro and have it setup to dual boot to use Linux.

At the moment, Intel just released its core 2 duo cpu, which is faster than any other cpu in the world. I would wait a month until the laptop version comes out, it shouldnt be much more if at all because core 2 duo is pretty cheap, about 1/2 the price of the original core duo.
The Myth that amd is not compatible is just that, a myth. I have had several AMD's and intels in the past two years and if anything the amd's were better. My current computer is a Intel Core Duo and is the best computer I have ever had, so I can just imaging how good Core 2 Duo is going to be.

I have had several AMD processors and have not had any compatility issues since windows 95.
For gaming AMD is the hot ticket, for 32/64 bit apps AMD is still the hot ticket.
AMD's are both faster and cheaper.
Both processors will give the reliability you specified my only siggestion with a laptop is get the bigger screen and maxout the RAM.

well if you really aren't a gamer. Then you should get an intel becuase they don't require as much power. They are ment to last a long time. I have a celeron m processor and it lasts me a for a long time. The AMD will take up way more power and it will die within two hours. I Suggest you don't go cheap is you want it to last 3 years. Get a decent brand that you know that backs up their products. like Hp or Dell or Toshiba.

Intel for me. Just a little 2.6 Celeron has served me better than by friend's 2800+ AMD Athlon (incompatibilities, "burnt" motherboards etc.)
Also, about the Windows thing, I suggest Windows XP Pro SP2.

I will go with Intel....i've used AMd itz also good but the compatibilty problem comes ahead...there isnt much difference in their power usage so it doesnt matter..intel is better and lasts long..i have an intel one..2.93 ghz..from 1 year... and guess wut it works exactly like the first day i bought it. i dunno if AMD is better for gaming but on Intel i play a lot of games n itz koool. Xp home, pro or media center doesnt really matter...they are almost the same...Xp home also works quite well..i've tried vista too but some new features of it are very annoying..it looks kool tho...
get an intel 1 and u will know the difference... at least it will last longer.
Good LUCK!!!

Either will be good but for better battery life I would go with intel centrino. Centrino is marketed as the "battery friendly" processor.
