In many cases, not all, the act of flushing the toilet while someone is taking the shower, takes the hot water away from the person that is showering. It's not that the person taking the shower doesn't have hot water for a long time, but they do lose it for a little while. The water will turn cold, and that could make a person angry and cause their skin to go into shock for a bit. That is why it is a big deal.

In my house if the toilet is flushed during a shower, the cold water shuts off and you get a blast of pure hot water --- Yikes! It works the other way too, if someone turns on the hot water, then you get an icy-cold spray. There are devices that can be installed in the plumbing system that bypasses the hot/cold dilemma, but I understand it's a major overhaul and quite expensive. The best way to avoid the problem is to wait with your shower until everyone else is done in the bathroom (and kitchen) or take your showers when everyone is gone. And if you are the one using the toilet or faucets when someone else is showering, try to be considerate. No one wants to feel like a live lobster.

In older homes, probably not so much now, when the toilet was flushed it got the cold water that would've been going into the shower at that time, thus the person in the shower got a blast of hot-only until the toilet tank filled and the cold water returned to the shower...I think plumbing is often not done that way these days, so the toilet and tub don't share one pipe for incoming water...

Flushing the toilet changes the temperature of the water in the shower fast so it is too warm because it takes cold water to refill the toilet and then back too cold after the person in the shower has to adjust the temperature to get it right again. Someone in a shower could get burned if you flush the toilet while they are running the shower.

When you flush the toilet it fills back up with like 5 gallons of cold water (which is deprived from the shower) thus resulting in extremely hot water on the person taking a shower.

Has to do with water pressure.
Youre taking a shower. You have hot water on, but you are cooling it with cold water to a temp that is comfortable. When you flush the toilet, the same cold water goes to fill the toilet - and thus the pressure is reduced to the shower. The result - extra hot water burning your azz and back. Not fun.
Hope that helps.

The flushing toilet does something to the cold water so the person in the shower gets all the hot water. Not fun.

A few years ago my wife and I lived in a house like that. When you flushed the toilet the water in the shower would get hotter. One night I asked her if she knew what the woman said when she fell off the cliff. (my wife was taking a shower) She responded, "no". Then I flushed the toilet. The water went hot, she screamed and I said (as I walked out of the room) "that's close enough!"

Often, especially in older homes, the water pressure isn't enough to sustain both, so if the toilet get flushed, the shower slows down and may get too hot for a second - since the cold flow has been directed to another place - the toilet
