different people react various ways to how food makes them feel. just as you stated, some depressed people dont eat or eat a lot, it depends on the persons brain chemistry and how much pleasure they get from eating their favorite foods (usually fatty and unhealthy) because these foods release certain chemicals within the brain that can put people at "ease" regarding their depression. some people are just so depressed that food is the last thing on their mind, the mental pain they deal with constantly comes before the thought of food itself. like i said, it various with many people....

Eating is linked to an individual's desire to survive. That answers both sides of your question. An eating depressed person is trying to comfort him- or herself with food. They have- consciously or unconsciously- decided to continue living even though they are depressed. A non-eating depressed person is possibly on the verge of suicide, but it may not be a conscious decision, just a vague feeling of "what's the use". If you or someone you know is depressed and not eating, it is time to seek help. For a friend, it might be enough to just stay with the person and see whether they are exhibiting any other self-destructive traits like self-mutilation, risky behavior in driving, drinking or drugs, inflicting pain, etc. If it is only a loss of appetite, it might pass in a few days, but other types of self-hating need intervention right away. And not eating doesn't always signal depression. If you have a depressed friend, it is worth it to learn more. Depression is the fastest-growing illness in our time and one of the least understood by the ordinary people who are in the best position to help a depressed person.

People generally take normal behaviors to extremes. Its not so much that they are eating alot or not alot, but that their eating patterns have changed to some extreme. This is also true for sleep. Its the changes in behavior that are some of the first manifestations of depression.

Some people stop eating when they're depressed because most depressed people tend to stop doing what they enjoy. They just feel too sad to enjoy it.
Some people eat when they're depressed because it brings them comfort, especially candy and junk food. They see food as they're friend. Plus, it gives them something to do besides cry and be sad.
