It's mainly because some guys are just jerks. But it could also be because, some guys, when with you alone, have a main objective--SEX. I'm definitely not saying it's all guys, but there are definitely a few out there like that. However, when you're with him & his friends, there's obviously not going to be anything sexual happening between the two of you. (Which, referring to the guy above, is probably because he doesn't want to look like a pansy!) It's also possible that the guy may not intend to insult/offend you when he's in front of his buddies, but he's just joking around and trying to be funny in front of his friends. Unless he's completely ignoring you or something like that, then... yeah, he just doesn't want to be viewed as a pansy.
This is coming from a personal experience in a past relationship. How did I overcome this problem and make sure it didn't happen again? Played hard to get! EXTREMELY hard to get, that is. I mean, still play when you're together, too. Don't be afraid to ignore his calls and text messages! Make him think you're a really busy girl, and let him know that he can only fit into your schedule if he's lucky. Eventually, give him a chance, and if he screws up, then drop him! Chances are, he won't screw up, because he'll be too excited that you finally gave him a chance. That's how you find the keepers!
(I'm going to warn you, though...what you think is a keeper can sometimes actually be totally clingy, and that can be VERY annoying. Look out for signs of clinginess beforehand, unless that's your kind of thing. Sorry for rambling!)

Immature boys tend to do this to show off to their friends. Their friends will make fun of them if they act like they care. Believe me... some of them don't grow out of it but most of them do. It's all about appearances to boys at a certain time in their lives. It's "not cool" to be sensitive or show that they care about their significant other. It's hurtful but try to take it in stride that women are more able to show their feelings and not worry so much about what other people think. Keep looking, mister right/mature is out there. It just takes some time and searching. Good luck

It's ego and pride and tends to affect young guys moreso than more mature guys...after they've lived life a bit and have stopped worrying about peer pressure and what their buddies will think about them or their girl or their car, etc., they tend to make better boyfriends...
Here's something to try in the future...before you commit yourself to someone, make sure you've been around he and his friends a bit first...if his behavior is unacceptable then you can write him off right away, and not have to have gone through the whole "boyfriend" thing before you find out he's really not good bf material yet...
