It's a brotherhood thing, acknowledging them and their bikes. I wave at all fellow motorcyclists regardless of make or style. Most bikers will stop and ask if you need assistance if you're parked on the edge of the highway. Common courtesy is a wonderfull thing when there are so many of us on the nation's roads!

Most people who modify their vehicles, whatever vehicle it is, enjoy their ride. Very few Harley's are stock more than a week after taking delivery. It is natural for a rider to be interested in other bikes as well. So if your bike is customized and your riding in the middle of the empty forest highway and another bike is going past you, there is probably some recognition. No, a LX470 Lexus driver won't get the same gesture from another SUV driver.

We used to do it to acknowledge each other in the old days when the number of riders was small. Now, if you wave at everybody on two wheels, you'd look like you were being attacked by bees.

Its tradition from the early day of motorcycling when they were few and far between.
