The main reason behind this would be the worlds of IMing (Instant Messaging) and text messaging.
Ususally in Instant Messaging the service was designed so that you could have multiple conversations at once, and this way you could see who messaged you easily. And it's the same for texting, too, except that using the letter pads on the numbers can take a long time for most people. Typing in my Yahoo! ID on my phone is an absolute nightmare!
But either way it's just being tattooed into their minds, like this one girl I know was writting a paper while IMing and she wrote the whole paper in all the abbreviations! I wanted to laugh so bad but I knew it wouldn't be polite and she'd probably hate me or something.

kids these days, they ain't got no manners! I blame it on the failing educational system! ^.~ I know I didn't get that great of an education when I was in school four years ago. My parents didn't care to help and my teachers had too many students to take care of so I usually slept in class. I think that's what's wrong with children these days also. They need to repeat english class.O.o

I think it's a combination of the two ... using the text language allows them to be lazy while disguising that they don't know how to spell or articulate properly.

It's a national rebellion against formal ways of typing.
Ok, it's not...it's just a way of typing. It's fast for IM, or Text Messaging.... IT's like slang or something.

I've always called it "Chat-Speak". It's irritating, but what irritates me the most are the ones that "try" to speak gangsta (in written form)... It just shows stupidity and a total lack of the command of the English language.

I think it's an IQ thing. The more you do this, the dumber you get. It really scares me that someone who can't spell "you" is going to be looking after me when I get old

It's shorthand. I sometimes write in shorthand when writing notes in class and since their may notes it saves type and i can keep up easier.
