Been there. My machine was set up by a hotshot that set it to 'overclock', causing it to run hot - and burn out. Hope this is not the case. Try getting into the bios and slow down the processor. Also, try starting in safe mode.

If it has not been overclocked then its a cooling fan issue. Try opening the case and hoovering the heat sinks and fans to clear the dust as this can insulate them and stop them cooling properly. Try running the system with the lid off too to check all the fans are running (CPU, PSU, Vid Card(possibly) etc. Repace anny with problems. The other thing is ythat if you are somewhere where the weather has turned hot lately (UK for instance) it could be that the system just cannot cool its self enough due to the lack of differential between the air outside and the heatsink. If this is the case having the case open to allow good air cirulation may help until the weather cools (my PC is running open for this reason).

Well, if it's a laptop, some of those run really hot and can shut down if they get too hot.

If you are running your computer 24/7 you might try just having it turned on when you are actually using it. I have always used the criteria that if I don't plan to use a computer for at least an hour, I shut it down. I have never had an over temperature problem and I never have hard drive problems, either, because they are not running continuously.

The cooling fan is not working. You need to have the power supply replaced and get more fans inside the computer probably.

Some computers overheat. You'll need to take apart your tower, and look at the fan. Clean it and make sure all wires to it are clean and in good condition.

It's not your operating system. It is most likley your computer is overheating. bring it into a specialist and have them replace the fan.
