Nothing. It's just competition for bragging--an artificial economy created by Yahoo to get people more involved and interested in answering questions. It lets them talk about more users, and gets advertisers more interested in buying space on Yahoo. Pretty great marketing idea, in my opinion.

This is a question I don't really like.
I use points to answer a lot more than thinking for more questions.
