I have a paper due for an archeological field school class I took. I took it the first year and then was asked to be an assistant and we turned it into an honors special project so I have to write this paper. It is a colonial parsonage site on a battlefield in NJ and I have no clue where to begin. I am drawing a complete blank. This has never happened with any other paper. This years dig turned up little, how do I fill 18 pages? I can not think of a thesis statement that I could build 18 pages around. Anyone have any suggestions?

start off with a history of the site and it's times/ culture. add the goals intended by your project.. then talk about what in fact was achieved. include procedures for preparation for the project, the actual dig and what may be anticipated for the future... watch one of those type shows on pbs...[ the format is always the same] they start off with lots of "hope and hype" and usually never come up with much.. but they fill 1 hr on tv?!?!

First of all you need to calm down, that's when your thoughts will start flowing. Brain storm on a piece of paper and then collect your ideas together. Each one then becomes a paragraph.

Some of my best work was written last minute. Twice I wrote a 2000 word essay the day before it was due, and got an A.

If I can do it, so can you! Have faith, and take deep breaths!

If you can get your hands on the field notes, try and talk about the culture you studied for a while then use the notes to say how you saw gender differentiation at the site. (From the research, these people appear to have been matrilocal, and at the site we found this plaque that said "live at home with mom", etc...). If you found a hearth, say if you think a man or woman used it and why...
Good luck!

Wow, sounds like you're up a creek. Maybe you should talk to your advisor, or plan ahead. Honors students can usually do just fine with paper writing, especially if you were the assistant-- I mean, you should have all the data you need. Start by reading other archaeology reports and maybe you'll get an idea of what's expected of you.

it sounds like you haven't found much stuff at that particular site. could you use that to your advantage? why didn't you find items at that site? is it likely that you'll find more stuff at nearby sites?

in general ask yourself questions like these to get yourself started. these questions will lead to other questions that you could write about. you paper will look really random once you finished, but the beauty of computers is that you can always move things around.
