The only thing I can think of after reading your email is to revert back to version 7.0 or 7.5. Version 8 is unsteady and people have had many "ghost" attacks using it. The earlier versions will work with your buddies who are using 8 so you dont have to worry about compatibility.
Go to http://www.oldapps.com/yahoo_messenger.htm and install a previous version.

If you are using the new Yahoo Messenger ver. 8.0, I would suggest that you go back to version 7.5.
8.0 is still very buggy.
