I think you just answered your own question. Marbury had received a political appointment from the previous administration when Madison became president. Marbury claimed it was unconstitutional that he was fired when Madison took office. Madison claimed that the Supreme Court had no authority to determine whether the appointment was constitutional, since it took place within the Executive Branch. The Supreme Court ruled that it was the duty of the Supreme Court, and no other branch of government, to interpret the Constitution. I think that covers each of the points you made.
