Tell them you are a homocide detective and ask them how well they knew the deceased, and why they are calling the deceased. Ask their name and address and tell them you might send someone over for a statement.

Tell them "no, I'm not interested and please don't call again."
If you're getting lots of calls from solicitors then you should sign up for the national Do Not Call list. If you just hang up or say you're busy or not there, they'll just schedule a call back. That list won't stop phone companies or market research though.

Before they passed the law, these people would call all the time, whenever. You couldn't get a word in to tell them you weren't interested. They just kept talking. So, rather than be rude and hang up on them, I would put the telephone receiver under the couch cushion and go about my business. A little later, I'd go back and they would be gone. It always worked.
