What your getting into the lock is sweat and dirt from your fingers over the years, plus, some pollution, (yea, it gets in the little holes :), and that is what is mucking up ths system.
So, what I would do first, is hit it with either WD-40, or, as I like to use PB Blaster. (Either one smells to high heaven, and takes awhile to dissipate, so, just bear with it, and wipe up the door knob with a rag, so that you dont get it on you after awhile).
Then, if you want to put some graphite in the lock, I would wait a few months for the oils to evaporate, then put it on the key, and shove it into the lock.
(Lockssmiths use both at different times, depending on situations)...
I wish you well..

First try other keys on the lock to make sure yours isn't damaged or worn down.
Go to your local hardware store and have a new key cut or extra one made if you don't have a spare. While the woman is cutting your key ask where to find a good graphite lubricant to put in the lock to solve your problem.

A better lubricant for locks :- scrape the lead from a pencil and put it on the key then feed it into the lock being graphite it will not attract dust it will lubricate the pins of the lock which could be holding the key

Graphite is best, they make small spray can of that you can use. Next choice is good old WD 40.

Perhaps you just need a new key, it could have been damaged over time and not fit properly any more.
