You would have to prove intent to cause harm. Injuries resulting from reg game play are an expected part of the game- you can not do anything, even if the move was against the rules. You need to show INTENT. You need to prove that the side tackle was done maliciously, with intent to harm and was not just done in the excitement of the game to protect the ball.

If the tackle can be proved to be made with intent to cause actual harm to the other player then yes you could in theory be liable. However the complexaty of proving the tackle was made with the intent to cause injury makes such cases difficult to prove.
Normaly the Footballing Assocation will impose their own fines and restrictions over any action they deem not to be in the nature of good sportsmanship.

think of bertuzzi. He checked the guy roughly....even though he didnt mean to cause as much damage as he did.....he did. He was charged wasnt he. I would look into it if i were you.
