Go to the library and take a look at some books on Norse artwork. Take photocopies of anything that interests you to bring to the tatoo artist, it will make his job easier.

Look at Viking Longboats and other carvings.
Do some online searchs for Norse Artifacts.
Also look at Rune Stones (the big ones,
not the individual rune-per-stone ones
used in divination).
That way you'll get authentic designs,
not modern Norse-Influenced work.

Good Luck & Bright Blessings!

If you are looking for something simple that works as a tribal you might want to do a Keyword and/or Image Advanced search on Yahoo for "Norse Runes" or "Nordic Runes". You want the ones that were historically featured on the old fortune-telling stones that were rolled like dice....(the ones that landed face-up were the ones that told the tale by the way, if I recall it correctly).

Just be a little mindful of what they all mean so you don't do anything *too* freakish to your flesh ok? There are a rare few weirdos who still see those runes as gifts of power, and you don't want to be disrespectful or anything....

And yes, having a good, high-quality printout to show your tattoo artist is a must, it really helps them figure out how the image will take shape on your flesh.

Hope this helps.

Maybe you could get the Hammer of Thor tattooed on your back with the handle going down the backbone; the main part of the hammer in the upper middle from shoulder to shoulder.
