The corollary is equally important. Television ads provide a fleeting image (that's why so many advertisers repeat their ads 30 seconds later!) and it has to be reinforced many times before it becomes firmly imprinted on the viewer's mind. Print medium, on the other hand, hangs around and doesn't disappear after you've looked at it.
Television can sell by association, however, and do it very effectively.
For example, when you look at automobile ads, they very seldom talk about things like motors, maintenance, tire life, etc. They show you what you can do with the car, the exciting places it can take you, even if they are filmed on a closed course....) So they aren't really selling the car, they are selling a dream. Television, by its inherent nature, does this much more effectively that print media.
There is an old adage in the advertising world: you don't sell the steak, you sell the sizzle. Television sells sizzle.

There are advantages of advertising on television because you reach a larger demographic audience. It lends a degree of credibility to the product. It allows for much more creativity than just posting an ad in a local paper. You can introduce a new product more quickly and establish an image more easily remembered by the audience.
