What do you think? Big business, the media, normal people, laziness, greed, the devil? What do you think?

The corporate media, advertising agencies, and the average person's mental laziness, to never ask themselves if consumption is where it's at? I say--ask yourself if the meaning of life is to consume. Or is there more?

I think it's a combination of advertisers, working for big corporations, targeting the younger demographic. Unfortunately, many younger people haven't had the benefit of being taught how to think critically about what products they really need or want, and what products' ads are just playing off their natural desires and insecurities to get them to buy-buy-buy. It's not the kids' fault, and it's not even really the corporations' fault, it's a problem in education.

I believe the solution isn't in finding out who is at fault because there are too many causes or influences to really measure, but rather in finding out how to turn the tide. Teaching kids to think things through logically and critically will be beneficial to a large proportion of the world's problems. Which is why I'm leaving my advertising career and becoming a teacher. ;-D

Having materials is not a crime. If you like these things you should work for them and have them. This makes the producer of these goods able to feed their families.
This is all a chain effect going on right now... Before we had material "greed" so to speak, we all had to have farms and know how to sew our own clothes and stuff like that.
I think a material society is necessary in order to keep society as a whole thriving.
So, what's the problem?

I can't point the finger at one industry or person, but the problem clearly has roots in the fact that life has gotten so easy that we now have too much time on our hands.

Back in the day, all our time was spent tilling fields and hunting for supper. And hand washing! With all that work to do, there was no time to go shopping.

I seriously think the Amish are on to a good thing. I'd never want to take it to that level, but I try to keep my life as simple and uncluttered as possible.

Definetly media and advertisements. I think the driving force of this is teens. They want to be just like that star on TV.

Big business--they want to make money off of whoever they can so they push everyone to buy it, thus we buy, and they become richer. Too many suckers buy too much of what they really don't need.
