The blood type is rare, but you do not require a Rhogam shot. A Rhogam shot is for a pregnant woman (or woman who has just had a child) who has a positive blood type, but is carrying a negative child. Or, if the mother has a negative blood type and is carrying a positive child. These web pages will explain this in better detail than I can.

Yes! AB- is very rare. If you have it, you should donate blood. I intern at a hospital, and i had to memorize the different blood types.

Out of 100 donors,

39 are O+
34 are A+
8 1/2 are B+
3 1/2 are AB+

7 are O-
6 are A-
1 1/2 are B-
1/2 are AB-

So, out of 200 people, only 1 person is AB-, and
Out of 1,000, that means only 5 people are AB-

It's very hard to find someone with that blood type willing to give blood.

Yes. Verrrry. But you might get any NEGATIVE blood transfered if you ever need it. Why?

AB blood has two blood type antigens A and B.
To receive A- blood or B- blood would be fine
To receive O- blood too, because it has no antigens at all, so it is just OK.

About Rhogam, it prevents you from generating ANTI Rh antibodies after an exposure to Rh, but it is only recommended to Rh negative women after a positive baby delivery so as not to hurt next child.

An Rh POSITIVE person doesn't need Rhogam, because she would not produce anti Rh, it is considered as a substance of his/her own and wouldn't attack it.

AB- is about 1% of the population, so pretty rare.
There's no issue with the immune system for any blood TYPE, so no shots.
