Unfortunately, such an adaptor does not exist. With older technologies, such as parallel ports and serial ports, USB adaptors could be built since the speed difference between USB and old technologies was quite large. However, with USB2's maximum speed being 480Mb/s and Firewire's being 400Mb/s, there simply isn't enough slack-speed in there for the data to be converted to USB and transferred to a computer as quickly as it comes from a firewire device. When transferring data over USB or Firewire independent of one another, no translation between technologies takes place, so the data flows through smoothly at maximum speed. When translating between the two technologies, though, some processing must take place, which delays the transfer. This delay makes such a converter between these two technologies difficult, if not impossible, to make.

If you require firewire for your desktop or laptop computer, add-on Firewire cards are available for almost every system. Simply look around on Google's Froogle shopping site for a PCMCIA firewire card if you have a laptop with a PCMCIA card slot or for a PCI card if you have a desktop computer with PCI card slots. Using the native technology will guarantee that things will work properly.

USB is USB and IEEE1394 is just that. If you want firewire, you need to install a firewire card in your system. If your laptop came without it, you will have to buy a laptop that comes with it. If such an adapter existed it would be pointless because firewire and USB would not be able to communicate properly. In addition you be sending information from firewire at this incredible speed to only be slowed down by the slower speed of USB 1.0, 1.1, and 2.0.

Here's the deal! Firewire is still faster than USB because it uses peer-to-peer architecture, allowing intelligent communication between the bus and the HDD or other target device. When it comes to high-speed USB 2.0 or older, it uses a master-slave architecture which uses more system resources then firewire and results in the delayed and slower transfers. You won't notice that, but firewire is still faster. If you were able to compare them side-by-side you would see the difference, oh believe me. *grins*

Hope that helps you better understand how that works.
