I think a lot depends on the area that you are planning on using your cell phone primarily in. For example I have a Verizon phone and from my house I'm lucky if I get two bars if I'm not sitting outside of my house. My Mom has a Cingular phone and if I hold it right next to my Verizon phone she has 4-5 bars. Ask your neighbors what cell service they use and how there coverage is. Another consideration is if you have plan on using your phone overseas. With Verizon and its CDMA technology it can be used in only about 20 countries as opposed to Cingular with it's GSM technology it can be used in close to 200 countries. As far as rate plans and such they are pretty comparable but like somebody did mention Cingular does have rollover which is a nice benefit. If I had to do it all over again I would choose Cingular (I guess maybe that has to do with the fact that I work for them).

I have Cingular. My husband has Verizon.
Both offer comparable pricing and service plans (unlimited evening and week-ends, member to member free calling, no roaming plans).
Pros on Cingular...roll-over minutes. Friendly, helpful customer service.
Pros on Verizon...excellent coverage. Friendly, helpful ON-LINE customer service.
Cons for Cingular...I am never going to use all those roll-over minutes. ; )
Cons for Verizon...so far the in store customer service is not exactly service. That could just be our area.
Find out which carrier most of your friends and family have and how they like it.

beware of cingular. I am still getting credit collection phone calls for a 881.00 phone bill. Yeah right! I had one cell phone and 6oo minutes at a 39.99 dollar fee every month. So someone please explain how in three months time my phone bill reached 881.00. Never exceded more then 100 minutes. I also had no internet or text messaging on my phone. Stay away from Cingular.

That really depends on your area. You sort of have to talk to different people to see which is superior. In some areas one carrier is way better than another, but in another area the exact opposite may be true. Also, I think both carriers have a risk-free 14 or 15 day trial period where you can try it, and if you don't like it, cancel the contract with no other obligations. I personally prefer Verizon for the fact that they consistently score highest in consumer reports and the wall street journal. I have never had a problem with them, and I feel their network is superior to others (I've tried all big 4 in Phoenix, AZ).

Neither T-Mobile, they give you a lot of minutes for cheaper then what Cingular or Verizon gives you.

Cingular. My whole family has it and it's the biggest network. Bigger than Verizon

Consumer Reports says that Verizon is overall better for reception throughout the USA. Verizon does tend to cost a bit more for the monthly plans.
Cingular has excellent reception in big cities, but in some cases you will find that Verizon has better reception.
All Cell Carriers give you at least 14 days to change your mind and get out of your contract.
Bottom Line - find people in your area with both of those carriers and check how happy they are with their service!
