I am 34 and I'm not offended, perse, but I am aware of it's history, why it was formed and I am a little uneasy towards people who try to say it isn't racist. Do you know it's history? Why the civil war was fought?
The minute Abraham Lincoln was elected, South Carolina seceeded from the nation on the grounds that he was an abolitionist and wanted to end slavery. The rest of the confederate states followed and formed the CSA.
More recently, that flag has been co-opted by the KKK and other terrorist groups in an attemptt to kill and intimidate black people all over the country.
So don't tell me that I don't know what it stands for. It seems that Iknow moe than you. You can argue that I don't know what's in your heart, but from the replies that I have seen here, it's as ugly as your symbol of hatred.

If taking that flag would end all racism, I say take it, but that will not happen. Racism is hatred in your heart. That flag has never killed anyone. It is the hand of all men that has done the damage. The confederate flag is part of history just as slavery is part of our history. You can not erase this history. We have come so far from those awful days. I have never known a slave in my lifetime, those days are over. We the people of America and we need to come together and forgive and forget and until we do this racism will always exist. Taking that flag will only create more problems. It is the freedom of America that allows you to speak your mind and stand up for what you believe in, but no one has the right to harm their fellow American.

I live in south carolina and we used to have a black dude who would stand in front of the state house and support the confederate flag being flown there. I used to work at the state house with a lot of black people and for the most part they thought it was silly.

i am not black but i find the rebel flag offensive, just as the german swastika is offensive. it symbolizes a time when human beings were treated like chattle and people fought and died over the issue. the loosers were the confederate that sanctioned slavery, including flogging, raping, lynching and doing what ever they want to slaves. i find the whole concept of the southern defense of slavery unacceptable and the stars and bars was the symbol of the slave states and their attempt to succeed from the union.

It really shouldnt bother me but it does. It is a symbol of the old south. Most black people, even though we are far removed from that era, carry this resentment inside of us just the same. I am 57.

The confederate flag is a symbol of a backward, non-progressive society where hypocracy reigned supreme. But gladly, that all ended in 1865.
Symbol of a rebel, you say? No, symbol of a loser.
